What Kind of Homes Are in Bletchley?

The Victorian and Edwardian terraces near Bletchley station — MK2 and parts of MK3 — are among the most characterful properties in the area. Rear yards on these properties are often accessed through the house which creates specific access challenges for traditional construction methods. Plot depths vary considerably and some properties sit close to or within conservation area boundaries which affects what can be built under Permitted Development.

The post-war estates in central Bletchley feature a mix of semi-detached and terraced homes on consistent plots — well suited to single storey rear extensions that open up the ground floor. Most extend to 3 metres under Permitted Development without any planning application.

The larger private estates that developed from the 1970s onwards — particularly around Fenny Stratford and Water Eaton — feature detached and semi-detached homes on more generous plots. These properties suit both single storey and double storey extensions and the plot sizes often allow for more ambitious schemes than the older streets closer to the town centre.

Do You Need Planning Permission in Bletchley?

Usually not for a single storey rear extension. The Victorian terraces and semis around the town centre can extend 3 metres to the rear under Permitted Development and the detached houses on the Lakes Estate and towards Newton Longville can go to 4 metres. The exception is the Fenny Stratford conservation area along Aylesbury Street and Watling Street, where side extensions and external materials are more tightly controlled.
