Kitchen Extensions in Milton Keynes
Create the open-plan kitchen-diner your family deserves
The kitchen has become the heart of the modern home — a place for cooking, eating, homework, entertaining, and everyday family life. A kitchen extension gives you the space to bring all of this together in one open, light-filled room that transforms how you use your home.
At Crownhill Building Services, kitchen extensions are our most requested project type. Over 20 years of building them across Milton Keynes means we understand exactly what makes a kitchen extension work — from the structural changes needed to remove the original back wall, to the positioning of services, glazing choices, and the layout details that turn a good kitchen into a great one.
The open-plan kitchen-diner has become the standard that most families aspire to. By extending to the rear and removing the dividing wall, a small, separate kitchen becomes a generous living space with room for a large island unit, a dining table, and a comfortable seating area — all with views and access to the garden through bi-fold or sliding doors.
Designing Your Kitchen Layout
The layout of your new kitchen is just as important as the building work itself. We work with you from the earliest stage to plan where everything goes, because the position of services — water supply, waste, gas, and electrics — needs to be built into the extension from the ground up. Getting this right at the design stage avoids costly changes later.
Popular layout choices include:
- Island kitchens — a central island provides worktop space, storage, a breakfast bar, and a natural divider between the cooking and living zones
- L-shaped and U-shaped layouts — wrapping units along two or three walls maximises storage and worktop area while keeping the centre of the room open
- Galley with dining — a streamlined cooking zone along one wall with a long dining table running parallel, ideal for narrower extensions
- Separate utility — incorporating a utility room within the extension to house the washing machine, dryer, and storage, keeping the main kitchen clean and uncluttered
Services and Finishing
A kitchen extension involves relocating or extending plumbing, electrics, and often gas supply. We coordinate all of these trades in-house so there are no delays waiting for separate contractors. Underfloor heating is a popular addition that works particularly well in extensions with tiled or stone flooring — it frees up wall space that radiators would occupy and provides even, comfortable warmth across the whole floor.
We handle every element of the build from foundations through to the finished room. That includes plastering, flooring, decoration, and fitting the kitchen itself if you choose to have us supply and install it. Many of our clients source their own kitchen units and we install them as part of the project — either approach works, and we will coordinate the schedule to make sure everything comes together smoothly.
Glazing and Natural Light
Large glazed doors are central to most kitchen extensions. Bi-fold doors fold back to fully open the rear wall to the garden, while sliding doors offer a clean, minimal look with wider panes of glass. Roof lanterns and skylights bring overhead light deep into the room, eliminating dark areas and reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day.
Timeline and Process
A typical kitchen extension takes 8 to 12 weeks to build. We begin with a free site visit to discuss your plans, take measurements, and provide an initial estimate. From there, we produce drawings, manage all planning and Building Control approvals, and give you a detailed fixed-price quote before any work starts. The price we quote is the price you pay.
