A bathroom is the smallest room in the house with the most trades in it. Plumbing, electrics, plastering, tanking, tiling, joinery and decorating all have to happen in a space that is often no bigger than two metres by two, and in the right order. What a Complete Bathroom Installation Should Include

  • Strip-out. The old suite, tiles, floor coverings and boxing come out and are removed from site.
  • Plumbing first fix. Hot and cold feeds, waste runs and soil connections are repositioned for the new layout. Shower valves and towel radiators are plumbed in. Underfloor heating pipework goes in if specified.
  • Electrical first fix. Bathroom-zone lighting, an extractor fan, shaver socket, illuminated mirror and electric underfloor heating mats are wired to the correct zones.
  • Structural work. New stud walls, openings, and any alterations to the floor structure for a level-access shower or wet room.
  • Preparation and tanking. Walls and floors are boarded and levelled, then a waterproof tanking system is applied to shower areas and, for wet rooms, the whole floor. This is the stage most often skipped by cheaper fitters and the reason so many showers leak into the ceiling below.
  • Tiling. Walls and floors, including large-format tiles, mosaics and feature panels, laid on properly prepared surfaces.
  • Second fix. The bath, shower tray and enclosure, basin, WC and brassware are fitted, connected and tested. Lighting, mirrors and accessories go in.
  • Plastering and decorating. Ceilings and any untiled walls are skimmed and painted with moisture-resistant finishes.
  • Finishing. Silicone sealing, a final clean and handover.

The Mistakes Poor Bathroom Fitting Leaves Behind

We are regularly asked to put right bathrooms that were fitted only a few years earlier. The same faults come up again and again, and almost all of them trace back to a stage that was skipped or done out of order.

  • Showers tiled straight onto plasterboard with no tanking, leaking into the room below within a couple of years.
  • Shower trays fitted before the floor was levelled, so water pools at the wrong end and never drains fully.
  • Waste pipes with too little fall, leading to slow drainage and smells.
  • Extractor fans wired to the wrong zone or vented into the loft rather than outside.
  • Tiling finished before the plumbing was pressure-tested, so a leak means cutting tiles out.

None of these are difficult to avoid. They happen when the person fitting the bathroom is only responsible for part of it and nobody is responsible for the whole.

A full bathroom installation in the same layout usually takes between one and two weeks. Creating a new en-suite from scratch, moving walls or repositioning the soil stack takes longer, and we give you a realistic programme before work starts. Where a house has only one bathroom, we plan the sequence to keep a working toilet available for as much of the job as possible, protect the route through the house, and clear up every day.
